Basic functions
Search functions
AND, OR and NOT.
* can be used within words and replaces zero, one or more letters there (e.g. learn* finds both learn and learning or learner) or between words and replaces a whole word there (e.g. learning * specialist also finds learning behavior specialist). finds learning * specialist also learning behavior specialist), # can be used within words and replaces zero or one letter (e.g. colo#r finds color and colour), ? can be used within words and replaces exactly one letter, but is not recognized as a truncation at the end of a word (e.g. ne?t finds neat, nest or next). Use of wildcards in combination with each other possible, no use of all wildcards at the beginning of a word possible.
Nn, Wn, n should be replaced with the maximum number of words between two terms. N does not take into account the order in which the search terms were entered. W, on the other hand, takes into account the order in which the search terms were entered. E.g. would find children W5 education matches containing children education but not education of children, children N5 education would find both (each five words apart). More complex entries can also be made, e.g. (learning OR education) W2 (test OR assessment).
Quotation marks must have the English spelling ("..."). Simultaneous use of wildcards and quotation marks is possible.
Search in title and abstract only possible separately.
Search in title and abstract only possible separately.
E.g. "Author", "Education Level", "Intended Audience".
Filter functions
In the EBSCO interface, search filters can be selected before (advanced search below the search interface) and after the search process (click on "Filter" below the search interface). Depending on the database, these differ to some extent, so it is advisable to get an overview of the filters available before and after the search process at the start of a literature search.
Can be narrowed down to the exact day.
"Topic", "Target group", "Educational level".
"Publication Type", "Document Type", "Source Types".
"Geography".
E.g. Full text, peer-reviewed.
If several values of a single filter are required at the same time, e.g. several document types, you can select all the desired values by left-clicking while holding down the Ctrl key if these settings are to be made before the search process.

Special functions
Important search commands
Search term is searched in all fields.
Search term is only searched for in the title.
Search term is only searched in the abstract.
Although the title and abstract can only be searched separately, the search commands can also be used to search both the title and the abstract within a search. To do this, the respective search term must be written into the search strategy once with the TI command and once with the AB command. Both must be combined with the operator OR. Example: TI didactics OR AB didactics
A single search command written before brackets automatically applies to all search terms combined in the brackets. Example: TI (cancer OR tumor AND neoplasm) TI (nursing OR caring)
Controlled vocabulary
ERIC has its own keyword system, which can be accessed within ERIC via EBSCO. The index term system is structured like a tree and there are therefore superordinate and subordinate index terms.
Click on "Advanced search" on the right below the search interface.
Click on "Topics" below the search interface.
Enter the term in the search interface below and set whether the index term should begin with the term ("Term begins with") or whether the index terms found should simply be sorted according to their relevance. It is advisable to leave the default setting "Ordered by relevance". Then click on "Search" (magnifying glass next to search interface).
- "Term Begins with": finds index terms that begin with the search term entered
- "Term Contains": finds index terms that contain the search term entered as part of the word
- "Relevancy Ranked": keywords found are ranked according to their relevance
A list of index terms found appears. By clicking on a term, you can view the terms that the respective index term describes as well as more general or more closely related index terms.
Suitable index terms can be selected (check the box) and added to the search with
AND/OR(via "Add to search" above the list). The term with the search commandDEappears in the search history. For superordinate index terms, you can specify that subordinate index terms are also included by ticking "Expand" to the right. The identified terms can also be entered manually via the search interface in ERIC via EBSCO using the following commands.
Search term is searched as index term, search term is exact index term.
Export of results
Export of single hits
- Mark the hits to be exported on the left with a tick.
- Click on the download icon (down arrow on hard disk) above the hit list. Select the desired file format and click on "Download".
- All further steps depend on the Internet browser and reference management software used.
Export of all hits at once
Depending on the license agreement of the institution, there may be different export functions. If the procedure described below is not possible at your institution, the hits can be exported using an alternative solution. At EBSCO, the institution can request the export of up to 25,000 hits independently of the license agreement.
- Click on the arrow directly next to the checkbox above the hit list and select "Export results (up to 25,000)" in the tab that opens.
- On the page that opens, select the desired file format and enter a suitable e-mail address. Then click on "Send".
- An e-mail with a download link will now be sent to the mailbox of the specified e-mail address.
- All further steps depend on the Internet browser and reference management software used.
Export of all hits (alternative)
The alternative export of larger sets of hits is time-consuming, as a maximum of 50 hits can be selected and exported at once, which involves a lot of scrolling. For access via an institution, it is therefore advisable to have the download option shown in "Export all hits" activated in consultation with the person(s) responsible (e.g. libraries) at the respective institution and EBSCO and, if possible, to do without this option due to its susceptibility to errors.
- As each page must be selected individually for the export, it is recommended to set the highest possible number of 50 hits for larger numbers of hits. This setting is made by clicking on "Show" above the hit list on the right-hand side. A tab opens where you can select 50.
- Click on the checkmark in the box on the left above the hit list to select the first 50 hits.
- Click on the download symbol (down arrow on hard disk) above the hit list. Select the desired file format and click on "Download".
- How the download works and is processed depends on the Internet browser and reference management software used. Once the file has been downloaded, uncheck the box on the left above the hit list to deselect the downloaded hits and allow the next hits to be selected.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the results list and click on "Show more results" to display the next 50 results.
- Select the checkmark above the first hit of the next 50 hits, indicated by a horizontal bar and page number and the words "(Results ... - ...)", to mark these hits. Then scroll up to download these results using the download symbol. Then deselect the downloaded results by unchecking the box above the list of results.
- Steps 5 and 6 must be repeated until all hits have been exported.
